The Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice (OTJ) has commenced closed hearings in Malé City on complaints about human rights violations, inhuman treatment and torture in Maldivian prisons that occurred from 1st January 1953 to 17th November 2018.
The hearings will be held from 22 May 2023 to 28 May 2023 at OTJ.
38 individuals are scheduled to testify at these hearings. These persons include those who have filed complaints with the OTJ, those who have registered to participate in the hearings and those who have requested to be given the opportunity to testify during the visit of this Office to Malé Prison, Asseyri Prison and Maafushi Prison.
OTJ also previously conducted closed hearings on jail torture in Maafushi Prison. A total of 24 statements were taken at the hearings carried out from 26th February 2023 to 4th March 2023.
