Al-Ustazah Maryam Nihayath joined the legal profession on 18 July 2005. In the period that followed, Al-Ustazah Maryam Nihayath has served in the judicial and legal fields and held many high-ranking positions.

After school, Ustazah Maryam Nihayath joined the Maldives Customs Service in 1997. She obtained her first degree in law from the then Maldives College of Higher Education (now Maldives National University). She then received a Master’s degree in law from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law on a Fullbright scholarship. She resigned from the Maldives Customs Service in 2009 following the decision of the Judicial Service Commission to appoint her as a Judge of the Civil Court of the Maldives. Ustazah Maryam Nihayath served as a Civil Court judge from 2009 until 2015. In 2016, she was appointed as Assistant Prosecutor General and later the same year, she was appointed as the Deputy Prosecutor General. Sher served as Deputy Prosecutor General until March 2019.

Ustazah Maryam Nihayath joined the Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice on 19 February 2023.
