Mariyam Laiza


Ombudsperson Mariyam Laiza has worked both in the education and human rights and humanitarian sector. She holds a Master’s in Education at Open University of Malaysia and Masters in Human Rights and Democratization from Mahidol University, Thailand. Prior to joining this position, she was working as a lecturer at Maldives National University. In addition to this, she has worked at Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), Educational Development Center (EDC), American Red Cross Maldives, Almadhrasathul Arabiyyathul Islamiyya and Kalaafaanu School. She was also a part-time lecturer at Mandhu College, Villa College, Mianz International College and Institute for Security and Law Enforcement Studies.

Some of her major contributions to the education sector include development of The National Curriculum Framework, and the development Social Studies syllabus key stage 1 &2 while major contributions to HRCM includes establishment of Human Rights Clubs and managing and contributing to the publishing of a Human Rights Club Manual for teachers and a Handbook for club students, involved in planning and executing major training programs, advocacy events campaigns

She is also a volunteer at Maldives Red Crescent (MRC) and the Scout Association of Maldives (SAM) and has made major contributions, especially in the training areas. She has been a Board Member at the Psychosocial Centre, MRC (2015 – 2016), Commissioner for Public Relations at Scout Association of the Maldives, (2019- 2011) and Council Member at Scout Association of the Maldives.
