The Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice has commenced public hearings on the forced eviction of residents of the South Huvadhu Atoll Thinadhoo in the year 1962.
Speaking at the first session of the public hearings which commenced today morning, the Chief Ombudsperson of the Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice, Uz. Abdul Salaam Arif said the purpose of conducting these hearings is to provide the victims of injustices the opportunity to tell their stories publicly and also obtain information for the investigation of cases carried out by the office. Furthermore, he noted that these hearings also aim to encourage institutions to provide justice to the victims, reveal the truth behind historic cases of human rights violations, increase awareness on human rights violations in the community.
The public hearings will continue from 19th March 2022 to 22nd March 2022 in the Maldives National University (MNU) G.Dh. Thinadhoo Campus. The hearings will be conducted in two sessions. The first session will be held from 09:00 to 12:00 while the second session is scheduled to take place from 14:30 to 18:00 every day.
The Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice also aims to conduct another hearing regarding this case in Male’ City on 27th March 2022.
