OTJ Concludes Closed Hearings in Malé on Cases of Torture in Maldivian Prisons

The Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice (OTJ) has concluded today the second round of closed hearings on complaints about human rights violations, inhuman treatment and torture in Maldivian prisons that occurred from 1st January 1953 to 17th November 2018.

The hearings were scheduled to run from 22 May 2023 to 31 May 2023. However, due to the absence of some of the parties who had registered to testify, the statements scheduled to be taken at these hearings concluded today. A total of 23 statements were taken at the hearings and victim support was provided to all 23 before and after the hearings. All the hearings were held at OTJ.

OTJ previously conducted the first part of the closed hearing on the alleged human rights violations, inhuman treatment and degrading torture in the prisons of the Maldives in Maafushi Prison, from 26th February 2023 to 4th March 2023, during which, 24 statements were taken.
