OTJ Concludes Pre-Meetings of Jail Torture Closed Hearings in Malé

The Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice (OTJ) has concluded pre-meetings in connection with the closed hearings to be conducted in Malé on complaints of allegations of human rights abuses, inhuman treatment and degrading torture in the prisons of the Maldives.

A team of OTJ held one-on-one meetings from 17th April 2023 to 18th April 2023 with persons shortlisted from those who had registered to testify at the hearings. The purpose of these meetings is to inform the detainees about the closed hearing, inform them about the affidavit of no objection to testifying at these hearings, to have the affidavit signed and to explain what testifiers should be aware of. The pre-meetings were held with a total of 16 individuals.

OTJ previously conducted the first part of the closed hearing on the alleged human rights violations, inhuman treatment and degrading torture in the prisons of the Maldives in Maafushi Prison, from 26th February 2023 to 4th March 2023.
