OTJ Conducts Closed Hearings Related to the Forced Eviction of Residents of G.Dh. Thinadhoo in 1962

The Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice (OTJ) recently held closed hearings regarding the identification of violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms which occurred during the forced eviction of residents of G.Dh. Thinadhoo in 1962 and to find out the reasons and causes of this incident.

A total of nine witnesses testified at the hearings, which ran from 16th October to 26th October 2022. The main objectives of the hearings are to facilitate the sharing of victims’ stories, to pressure authorities to seek justice for victims, to find out the truth about past violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and to obtain information for this office’s investigation.

OTJ also conducted a public hearing related to this incident in G.Dh. Thinadhoo from 19th March to 21st March 2022.
