OTJ Extends Statement Registration for Thinadhoo Public Hearing

The Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice has extended the period of statement registration for the public hearings being conducted to obtain further information and provide victims of the cases submitted to OTJ regarding the systematic violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms which occurred during the forced eviction of residents of G.Dh. Thinadhoo in 1962 the opportunity to publicly speak about their experiences.

In an announcement released today, OTJ said the public hearings in these cases will be carried out from 03rd – 05th March 2022 in G.Dh. Thinadhoo, whereas further hearings will be conducted from 18th – 19th March 2022 in Male City.

Additionally, OTJ has requested all those who wish to give statements in these public hearings to submit the following information via SMS or call to 7223473 or emailing to hearings@otj.gov.mv by 1400hrs of 24th February 2022.

OTJ has also publicized an information sheet detailing the criteria for shortlisting participants who wish to give statements and the Code of Conduct for participants.

Public hearings are formal proceedings held as a form of additional treatment, to obtain information needed for investigations or to allow those associated with a specific case to voice out their thoughts and feelings. Public hearings can be conducted as both closed and open hearings.
