Team of OTJ Staff Visit Dhoonidhoo Prison

A team from the Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice (OTJ) recently conducted a visit to K. Dhoonidhoo Prison on 10th October 2023. This was part of the OTJ’s ongoing investigation and research into the alleged human rights violations, inhuman treatment and torture committed in the prisons of Maldives from 01 January 1953 to 17 November 2018.

During this visit, the OTJ team inspected the condition of the police custodial jails. Information was also obtained on the procedures applied to those arrested and those currently in custody.

The OTJ conducted closed hearings on the alleged human rights violations, inhuman treatment and torture committed in the prisons of Maldives from 01 January 1953 to 17 November 2018 in K. Maafushi from 26 February 2023 to 4 March 2023. Further hearings on these cases were also carried out from 22 May 2023 to 31 May 2023 in Malé City. OTJ also held a series of focus group discussions regarding these cases from 3-4th July 2023.
