Team of OTJ Staff Visit Hulhumalé Prison

A team from the Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice (OTJ) visited the Hulhumalé Prison yesterday. This was part of the OTJ’s ongoing investigation and research into the alleged human rights violations, inhuman treatment and torture committed in the prisons of Maldives from 01 January 1953 to 17 November 2018.

During today’s visit, the OTJ team inspected the condition of the prison and listened to the concerns of the prisoners. The information gathered during the visit will be used in the investigation and research of this office.

The OTJ recently conducted closed hearings on the alleged human rights violations, inhuman treatment and torture committed in the prisons of Maldives from 01 January 1953 to 17 November 2018 in K. Maafushi. Further hearings on these cases are scheduled to be held in the Malé City.
