Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice

Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice (OTJ) is an office established on 17th January 2021 by the president of Maldives under the Act 28/2020, Transitional Justice Act. The Office consists of three ombudspersons elected by the president, among which one of the ombudspersons is the Chief.
The office is mandated to look into the systematic violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms occurring from 1953 to 2018 by a person/persons in an authoritative position or by government institutions/ institutions.
The purpose of the Act is to seek recognition for victims of violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms and provide peace, reconciliation and reparations while taking along institutional reforms to ensure such violations do not repeat in the future.
